In the intro our book tells us that Beowulf was ignored by literary critics until midway through the 19th century. Maybe the earlier critics were on to something because for the life of me I can't see why this is important. Maybe historically it provides a snapshot of thanes and Anglo-Saxon (or Danish) life.
